Santorini, a magical land in the heart of the Aegean Sea, is one of the most celebrated holiday destinations in the world. It has all the Cycladic-island quaintness, in addition to dramatic scenery, such as the colourful cliffs and beaches, the spellbinding Caldera, the famous volcano, and its enchanting sunset, which for many travellers is the most beautiful vision in the world. On this page, you are provided with useful information about Fira, as well as Santorini sightseeing and beaches.
Fira Santorini
Fira is the capital of Santorini Island, and one of its most popular holiday resorts. The settlement is extremely picturesque, with whitewashed houses, narrow alleyways and a breathtaking view of the Santorini volcano and Caldera. Much of the island’s nightlife is situated in Fira, as a plethora of cafes, bars, and clubs, as well as tavernas and restaurants, are located in its charming streets.
Fira Santorini Sightseeing & Attractions
In and around the area of Fira, there are many wonderful sites and attractions, such as the Gyzi Venetian Castle and the two cathedrals. We also recommend visiting the Archaeological, Folklore and Prehistoric Thira Museums, where a plethora of historical artefacts from all over the island are displayed. Fira Town is also ideal for nonchalant strolls that allow visitors to ‘soak up’ the traditional Cycladic charm of Santorini Greece.
Apart from sightseeing in Fira, don’t forget to visit the two magnificent ancient sites of the island: Akrotiri and Ancient Thira. The first is a Prehistoric settlement that was preserved for ages beneath lava and ash that spewed from the volcano in the 17 th century BC. Today, visitors can admire an entire settlement that has been connected to the Lost Continent of Atlantis. Ancient Thira is situated on a hilltop overlooking the Aegean Sea, between the settlements of Kamari and Perissa. Ruins of the city, including sanctuaries, a theatre, an agora, and a gymnasium, offer visitors a glance into the rich history and culture of the island.
From Fira, you can take an excursion boat to Thirassia, Nea Kammeni and Palea Kammeni, the volcanic isles situated in the Caldera area, opposite Santorini.

Santorini Beaches
The beaches on Santorini Island are ideal for sunbathing and swimming, and are also very impressive due to their dramatic settings. The most popular Santorini beaches are the Red and White Beaches located near Akrotiri on the southern coast of the island, and the greyish and black sandy beaches in Kamari, Monolithos, Perissa and Perivolos, which are situated along the eastern coast of Santorini. Other beaches, such as Armeni, Ammoudi, Baxedes, Paradissos, and Vourvoulos are also recommended for swimming and relaxation under the warm Aegean Sun. Cuisine of Santorini Greece
During your stay in Fira, we recommend sampling the local delicacies at one of the traditional tavernas or high-end restaurants on the island. Santorini is celebrated for its luscious tomato balls, courgette balls, fava bean dip, sun-dried cherry tomatoes, fried white eggplant and fresh seafood dishes. Santorini wines are considered some of the finest in Europe, due to their distinctive flavour, which is attributed to the volcanic properties of the island’s soil.
